Have you ever read a book or books you would consider 'toxic' because of the effect it(they) had on you? If so, which one(s)? - Maria @ A Night's Dream of Books
Oh man, either everyone is going to say this or I'm going to have a lot of people coming after me. 😓
I know, I know. At some point it's been cool to hate on Twilight, that's not what this is about. I did read the first three and a portion of the 4th. I have no explanation or excuse for why I read so much of (and spent money) on a series I dislike so much, but it happened.
I'll be honest in saying it more bothers me that this is a YA series and not aimed at adults. It's been around a decade since the first one was release and I am fairly certain it did not raise the amount of abusive relationships.
BUT --- it still makes my skin crawl and it's not supposed to.

Hahahahaha. I hated Twilight too. I read all four books (that I borrowed) but I checked out in the second book when Bella threw herself off a cliff because she was sad her boyfriend left. It was just too much. Great choice.
ReplyDeleteHere's my HOP
Happy Friday.
Haha! Yeah, I checked out officially (and stopped reading) after they had sex and the line of "I bit the pillow" happened. I threw the book across the room and just left it there.
DeleteIt wouldn't go so far as to call it toxic, but it's true that the Bella-Edward relationship is problematic.
ReplyDelete"Problematic" is a bit of an understatement, imo. I don't remember much from the books, but he stalked her and messed her car up so she couldn't visit a friend that he disproved of. That's abuse.
DeleteI wasn't too thrilled with the Twilight series. I think I only read the first book.
ReplyDeleteThe Hunger Games were really bad.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I actually enjoyed The Hunger Games, but I do think the love triangle was shoehorned in.
DeleteI love how this question has stirred up a whole smorgasbord of opinion on what is toxic. It really shows that there is nothing as queer as folk!
ReplyDeleteI didn't much like Twilight but I don't think I'd call it toxic either.
I'm not sure I'd 100% say that any book is toxic - at least not one I've read.
DeleteI chose this one because it made me feel the absolute opposite of what the author intended.
