This week's topic: Childhood Movie

Oh, I have a lot.

These three were out of the very small VHS collection we had growing up. I had that Pizza Hut commercial before The Land Before Time memorized.

Every summer my siblings and I would stay at our grandparents for about a month. They had a much larger collection of tapes than we did at home so there are quite a few that we wanted to watch. These three were always on the top of my list to see when we got there.

This week's topic: Movie of 2017

I don't usually get to watch movies in the theatre. This year, I actually went 5 times, which is a lot more than I normally do. The two NOT listed are Some Like it Hot (from the 1960s, lol) and the My Little Pony Movie (which wasn't anything special).

Every Day - David Levithan

Summary (from goodreads): Every day a different body. Every day a different life. Every day in love with the same girl.
There’s never any warning about where it will be or who it will be. A has made peace with that, even established guidelines by which to live: Never get too attached. Avoid being noticed. Do not interfere.

It’s all fine until the morning that A wakes up in the body of Justin and meets Justin’s girlfriend, Rhiannon. From that moment, the rules by which A has been living no longer apply. Because finally A has found someone he wants to be with—day in, day out, day after day.

Edition Read: Ebook borrowed via Overdrive

Full disclosure, I've been dreading writing this review.

Thoughts:
Every Day does a decent job at trying to shine light on some hot button and often misunderstood issues (ie: sexual orientation, gender identity, severe depression, undocumented immigrants, addiction, etc...), but it grossly misses the mark by completely skipping over any racism an African American person might face and by fat shaming the hell out of an obese character.

The main part of the story (A & Rhiannon) was okay.
I do like that it addressed and subverted the whole insta-love trope. YA and romance novels tend to rely too heavily on this and it's one reason I shy away from novels proclaiming to be a love story. A does have insta-love, but Rhiannon is level-headed enough to tell A that they don't actually know each other.

The characterization was all over the place. I didn't like A and I think I was supposed to. Rhiannon was a pretty solid character. I never believed the boyfriend (Justin?) was as much of a tool as A claims he is.

The ending wasn't terrible, but it was weird. The overall concept of the ending was fine and I knew it was going to end the way it did (or it was going to end stupidly), but I disliked how it played out. It's hard to discuss it without spoilers. It was just plain silly and, quite frankly, arrogant.

Verdict:

Thin plot and I don't buy the ending (completely). However... it is a quick read with an interesting premises. Would be perfect for a day at the beach or lounging by the pool for a couple hours. Just, don't over think it.

I am interested in the second book since it is told from Rhiannon's point of view and I actually liked her.

Quibbles:
-I wish the possessions were a little longer. By limiting each one to a day, it forces the book to be preachy because any problems must be addressed and brought to the front immediately. If there was more time, I think the issues could come to light in a more natural and subtle way.

Bookish (and not so bookish) Thoughts

Bookish and Not-So-Bookish Thoughts is a weekly blogging event hosted by Bookishly Boisterous. It allows book bloggers (and non-book bloggers) to write about pretty much anything, bookish or otherwise (i.e. share exciting plans for the weekend, rants on things they’ve encountered during the week, etc.).

1. I hate Valentine's Day.

2. Used Walmart's grocery pickup for the first time... and I'm hooked. I've been having so much anxiety over going to the grocery store over the past couple of months that I put it off as much as possible, which ends up costing us more money. Now I can just add what I need throughout the week and then do a full thing the day before. I just did it for the second time this morning on the way from dropping my daughter off. This time I allowed substitutes because I found out they don't charge you more. If you agreed to pay a certain amount, they honor THAT price. (I ended up getting 48 pack of K cups for the price of a 12 pack. HOPEFULLY, this blend is good. I was just buying it to see if it was any good.)

3. Looking for a book to buy. I have a Google Play deal where I can get $3 off any $3+ book. (I want to use this on a book between $3-5. I have some unused Play credits and don't really want to spend cash if I can avoid it.) I'm openly taking recommendations.

4. Trying out breakfast burritos with my daughter to see if that helps her blood sugar levels. Yes, the tortillas still have carbs, but one problem pointed out at her last appointment was that how much carbs she eats in the morning seems to throw her off. (That said, she's 11 and hitting puberty which is ALSO majorly throwing her levels off.) They said to try for more protein and less grains. I need to find some lower carb ones. She's not keen on waking up even earlier just to eat some eggs. I can't say I particularly blame her. She does like the burritos though, so that's a plus.

5. I am in a huge reading slump. I did finish two books, I just haven't written the reviews yet. Bleh. I need to do that.

6. Looking into updating my blog's look. The current one is pretty utilitarian and I just wanted to get the blog up and running rather than focusing on getting it perfect. I used to be able to do coding (back in the early aughts), but it's changed a bit and I'm not sure I really want to go really into it.

7. Really loving the new PBS show "We'll Meet Again". Haven't seen the most recent episode, but it is so well done. I can't find anyone else who watches it!

Until next time
-Shannon

This week's topic: Valentine's Day Experience

I'm not super big on Valentine's Day. Didn't really date a lot in high school, lol.
The only one I even remember, was not actually on the day, but the day after.

I was still in college (for that brief period of time I was in college) and could not skip that particular class. (It was a once a week one and if you missed more than 2 or 3, you would basically fail. AND I was already scheduled to miss one for wisdom teeth removal later on.)

That's not really important.

Anyway...
My husband proposed on February 15, 2005.

Bookish (and not so bookish) Thoughts - Feb 8, 2018

Bookish and Not-So-Bookish Thoughts is a weekly blogging event hosted by Bookishly Boisterous. It allows book bloggers (and non-book bloggers) to write about pretty much anything, bookish or otherwise (i.e. share exciting plans for the weekend, rants on things they’ve encountered during the week, etc.).

1. How did I get, yet another, cold?!

2. Somehow I have managed to check out a bunch of YA books. O_O They seem alright, but I'm normally not a fan of the genre.

3. The husband and I finally caved and allowed the daughter to watch Stranger Things. She's 11 so we were a little iffy on it. She, however, is enjoying it. She's just at an awkward age. If she was two years younger, NO. If she was two years older, yes.

4. Another of my Great Uncles died this past week. We were not even remotely close, but he is the second blood relative of that generation to pass recently. Including non-blood relatives - there have been 4 or 5 in the past 3 years.
I feel some sense of loss and ... impending-ness. I don't want to say doom. Just this anxiety. Moreso than usual.

5. Really need to do my taxes. D:

6. After feeling very shitty for a very long time. (Thank you depression!) I just cut and dyed my hair. And I do mean *I* did it.
Ignore my face, I am terrible at pictures and worse at selfies.

There is no before, but I didn't have bangs and no orange. I have gone wilder with color, but my current job doesn't allow non-natural colors. (And yes, two-tone is allowed... if both colors are natural.) Orange technically isn't natural, but it should fade to a natural looking "red" by the time it starts up. As it is, it's just turned a little more carroty and not so neon. (It probably helps that I was unable to get my hair to blonde-blonde in one sitting.)

This week's topic: Website to Shop For Books

Kobo!

For ordering physical books, I am usually lazy and go via amazon.

There is one online book thrift store I want to check out. I had initially hoped to use it for my daughter's school books, but I waited too long to guarantee they would be here in time for school to start.
https://www.thriftbooks.com/
I can NOT vouch for this site one way or the other. The prices are good, so worth a try if you are not looking to get something immediately.

For most physical books - I prefer to buy at thrift stores or at my daughter's school's annual used book fair.

Book Blogger Hop: Feb 2nd - 8th

Do you prefer to blog about (a) specific book genre(s), or do you have an eclectic blog? Maria @A Night's Dream of Books
Eclectic. I tend to burn out on my favorite genres so it's better for me to read a sort of range.
